Overview of global cancer data from 2020 to 2021

Cancer is a serious threat to human life and health. On January 6, 2022, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) under the World Health Organization (WHO) released the IARC Biennial Report 2020-2021; WHO also released the World Cancer Report 2020 in 2020; GLOBOCAN 2020 was released in December 2020, estimating the incidence rate, mortality and cancer development trends of 36 cancers in 185 countries / regions around the world.

According to the latest assessment of IARC, 19.29 million new cancer cases will occur in the world in 2020, including 10.06 million male cases and 9.23 million female cases; In 2020, there will be 9.96 million cancer deaths worldwide, including 5.53 million males and 4.43 million females. In this century, cancer is expected to surpass cardiovascular disease and become the main cause of premature death in most countries. What is shocking in the IARC survey data is that breast cancer has overtaken lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer type in the world for the first time.

The specific data are as follows:
1、 Overview of global cancer incidence

In 2020, 19 292 789 new cases are estimated globally. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most common cancer for the first time. In 2020, there were 2261419 new cases of breast cancer, accounting for 11.7% of the total cancer incidence. The top ten cancers with new cases in the world are: breast cancer 2.26 million (11.7%), lung cancer 2.2 million (11.4%), colorectal cancer 1.93 million (10.0%), prostate cancer 1.41 million (7.3%), gastric cancer 1.09 million (5.6%), liver cancer 910000 (4.7%), cervical cancer 600000 (3.1%), esophageal cancer 600000 (3.1%), thyroid cancer 590000 (3.0%) and bladder cancer 570000 (3.0%).

2、 Overview of global cancer deaths

In 2020, it is estimated that 9958133 cancer patients will die globally, and lung cancer is still the leading cause of cancer deaths. It is estimated that 1796144 people will die of lung cancer, accounting for 18.0% of the total cancer deaths. The top ten cancers in terms of death cases in the world are: lung cancer 1.8 million (18.0%), colorectal cancer 940000 (9.4%), liver cancer 830000 (8.3%), gastric cancer 770000 (7.7%), breast cancer 690000 (6.9%), esophageal cancer 550000 (5.5%), pancreatic cancer 470000 (4.7%), prostate cancer 380000 (3.8%), cervical cancer 340000 (3.4%) and leukemia 310000 (3.1%). The top 10 cancer types accounted for more than 70% of all cancer deaths.

3、 Overview of male cancer incidence in the world

In 2020, there will be an estimated 10065305 new male cancer patients in the world, accounting for 52% of the total, with lung cancer, prostate cancer and colorectal cancer being the most common. The top ten cancers in terms of the number of new cases of men in the world are: lung cancer 1.44 million (14.3%), prostate cancer 1.41 million (14.1%), colorectal cancer 1.07 million (10.6%), gastric cancer 720000 (7.1%), liver cancer 630000 (6.3%), bladder cancer 440000 (4.4%), esophageal cancer 420000 (4.2%), non Hodgkin lymphoma 300000 (3.0%), kidney cancer 270000 (2.7%), leukemia 270000 (2.7%), which account for nearly 70% of the total number of new cancers in men.

4、 Overview of global male cancer deaths

In 2020, 5528810 men will die of cancer in the world, accounting for 56% of the total, including 1.19 million lung cancer deaths, far more than other types of cancer. In 2020, the top ten cancers with the number of male cancer deaths in the world were: lung cancer 1.19 million (21.5%), liver cancer 580000 (10.4%), colorectal cancer 520000 (9.3%), gastric cancer 500000 (9.1%), prostate cancer 380000 (6.8%), esophageal cancer 370000 (6.8%), pancreatic cancer 250000 (4.5%), leukemia 180000 (3.2%), bladder cancer 160000 (2.9%), non Hodgkin lymphoma 150000 (2.7%), These ten cancers account for nearly 77% of male cancer deaths.

5、 Overview of global female cancer incidence

In 2020, there were an estimated 9227484 cases of new cancer among women worldwide, accounting for 48% of the total. Among them, 2.26 million cases of new breast cancer were the most common, far exceeding other types of cancer among women. The top ten cancers in the number of new cases of women in the world are: breast cancer 2.26 million (24.5%), colorectal cancer 870000 (9.4%), lung cancer 770000 (8.4%), cervical cancer 600000 (6.5%), thyroid cancer 450000 (4.9%), uterine body cancer 420000 (4.5%), gastric cancer 370000 (4.0%), ovarian cancer 310000 (3.4%), liver cancer 270000 (3.0%), non Hodgkin lymphoma 240000 (2.6%), which account for 71% of the number of new cancers in women.

6、 Overview of global female cancer deaths

In 2020, there were 4429323 female cancer deaths worldwide, accounting for 44% of the total, with breast cancer, lung cancer and colorectal cancer being the most common. In 2020, the top ten cancers with the number of female cancer deaths in the world were: breast cancer 680000 (15.5%), lung cancer 610000 (13.7%), colorectal cancer 420000 (9.5%), cervical cancer 340000 (7.7%), gastric cancer 270000 (6.0%), liver cancer 250000 (5.7%), pancreatic cancer 220000 (4.9%), ovarian cancer 210000 (4.7%), esophageal cancer 170000 (3.8%) and leukemia 130000 (3.0%), which accounted for nearly 74% of the total number of female cancer deaths.

7、 Cancer incidence rate and mortality in different regions

Globally, although the incidence rate and mortality rates in different regions are not the same, overall, the incidence rate of all cancers in men (222.0/100000) is 19.3% higher than that in women (186.0/100000). Among males, the highest incidence rate is in Australia / New Zealand (494.2/100000), and the lowest incidence rate is in West Africa (100.6/100000); Among women, the highest incidence rate is in Australia / New Zealand (405.2/100000), and the lowest incidence rate is in central and South Asia (102.5/100000). Globally, the mortality rate of all cancers in men (120.8 per 100000) is 43.4% higher than that in women (84.2 per 100000). Among men, the highest mortality rate is in Eastern Europe (165.6 per 100000), and the lowest mortality rate is in Central America (70.2 per 100000); Among women, the highest mortality rate is in Melanesia (118.3 per 100000), and the lowest mortality rate is in Central America and South Central Asia (63.1 per 100000).

To sum up, the global cancer burden varies significantly, but the situation of cancer prevention and control in various countries is grim. The diversity of cancer has enhanced the necessity of global efforts to strengthen the control of the disease. Countries have included cancer prevention and treatment into their national health plans, emphasizing the importance of cancer screening and improving the quality of cancer treatment, which can help reduce the burden and suffering of cancer worldwide in the future, narrow the gap in cancer burden among countries, and gradually and steadily reduce the overall burden of global cancer.
